The name
"Comisky" was originally spelled "Kaminski." It is of Polish origin
and means rock,
stone, one who works with rock or stone, or one who comes from a rocky
place. Apparently such places are numerous in Poland.
The name Kaminski is as common in Poland as
the name Jones is in the United
States.
The family name
was changed from KAMINSKI to COMISKY sometime between 1905 and 1919.
According to the family story, Edward Comisky, son of Josef and Nellie
Kaminski, was the first to change the name. The reason for the
change remains unknown.
All of the
Kaminski's and Comisky's listed in this website are descendants of the
aforementioned Josef and Nellie Kaminski. They immigrated to the
United States around 1893 and settled in the central New Jersey and
eastern Pennsylvania area. Their primary descendant for this family
line is their youngest son, George Mitchell Comisky. Together with
his wife, Elizabeth Luella Kice, they produced 14 children, 25
grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren, and 2 great great
grandchildren. Taking into account all descendants, ancestors, and
marriages identified to date, more than 900 individuals and more than 200
surnames encompassing 12 generations are included in the extended Comisky
family.
The "Kice" family name descends from the "Apgar" and
"Tiger" families of Hunterdon County, New Jersey. Both of these
families immigrated from Germany in the 1700's. Little is known
about the Kice family though there is some indication they immigrated from
England in the
1800's.
